Connecting Water.
Powering the Future.
The Congo to Zambezi Water Transfer Project is a proposed transboundary infrastructure initiative exploring new pathways for water resilience, hydropower and long-term regional development.
A regional vision for water and energy
CZWT Africa is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) advancing the Congo to Zambezi Water Transfer concept. Its focus is to explore the technical, environmental, institutional and commercial feasibility of transferring water between river basins while supporting hydropower resilience.
Water Security
Explore opportunities for drought resilience, strategic storage and more dependable water availability.
Hydropower
Evaluate how coordinated water management could support existing and future hydroelectric infrastructure.
Regional Integration
Investigate cross-border cooperation that could support agriculture, industry and economic growth.
From the Congo Basin to the Zambezi
The concept considers an inter-basin transfer alongside coordinated storage, hydropower operations and downstream abstraction opportunities. All routes, volumes and benefits remain subject to rigorous feasibility assessment and relevant approvals.
Source
Assess sustainable water availability and abstraction options in the Congo system.
Transfer
Evaluate engineering corridors and energy requirements for inter-basin transfer.
Store & Generate
Study off-river storage and possible contributions to Zambezi hydropower operations.
Distribute
Investigate downstream water supply opportunities for Southern African countries.
Infrastructure with regional purpose
Climate resilience
Potential mitigation of seasonal and long-term water variability.
Energy reliability
Study potential hydropower benefits, including net energy and ecological trade-offs.
Economic opportunity
Explore benefits for water-dependent communities, industries and agriculture.
Feasibility first. Partnerships always.
CZWT Africa seeks engagement with governments, basin authorities, technical specialists, development finance institutions and other stakeholders. Project progression requires hydrological modelling, environmental and social assessment, transboundary agreements and bankable engineering.
